Emoji, symbols and kaomoji — what the difference actually is
People use the three words interchangeably, and the difference decides whether a character survives being pasted somewhere. Emoji are characters that platforms render as colour pictures — 🎀 is U+1F380, and the artwork is drawn by whoever made the font on your phone, which is why it looks different on an iPhone and a Samsung. Symbols are ordinary text characters that happen to look decorative: ♡ is U+2661 from the Miscellaneous Symbols block and stays the colour of the surrounding text. Kaomoji (顔文字) are faces built from several characters — (◕‿◕) — born in Japan in the mid-1980s and read horizontally, so you never tilt your head.
The practical consequence: a name field that strips colour emoji will usually still accept symbols and kaomoji, because to the filter those are just letters and punctuation. That is why every "game-safe" pick on this page is a symbol rather than an emoji.
Why the same character looks different on two phones
Unicode standardises the character — a number and a name — and nothing else. The picture comes from the font installed on the device doing the displaying. So the person reading your bio sees their own device's drawing of it, not yours. When a character appears as an empty rectangle, that device simply has no font covering it; the character itself is intact and pasting it somewhere else will show it correctly.
Combining marks, and why some combos look broken here but fine on TikTok
Many aesthetic combos use combining characters — marks with no width of their own that attach to the character before them. ᪲ (U+1AB2, Combining Infinity) is one; stack three after a heart and you get the trailing-smoke look people search for. Desktop code editors ship narrow fonts and render these badly, phones do not. We keep every combo byte-for-byte rather than "cleaning" it, because cleaning would delete exactly what people came to copy.
