Where these are accepted

Tested per field — the honest version
App / field Decoration Limit Last tested What actually happens
TikTok username (@handle) Rejected / stripped 2–24 characters August 2026 Letters, numbers, underscore and dot only, and it cannot start or end with a dot. Decorated characters are rejected outright.
TikTok display name Accepted No decoration limit found August 2026 Accepts symbols, kaomoji and decorated combos. This is the field every "TikTok font" guide actually means.
Instagram bio & name Accepted Both fields accept decoration August 2026 Bio and display name both take decorated characters. The @username does not.
Game display names (Roblox, Free Fire) Rejected / stripped Emoji stripped; text marks usually pass Not tested in-game Colour emoji are stripped from most in-game name fields, while plain marks — ⋆ ★ 𐙚 ୨୧ ✧ — usually survive. Each game runs its own private filter and changes it without notice, so use the rename preview before you confirm.
Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp Accepted Long combining stacks may be trimmed August 2026 Display names and messages accept the full range. Very long combining stacks may be trimmed in narrow layouts.

Platform filters are undocumented and change without notice, so we re-test rather than copy forward — see how we curate and verify.

uwu is a face, not a word. The two u shapes are closed, contented eyes and the w between them is a small smiling mouth. That is the whole thing — three ordinary letters, no special characters, which is why it survives username fields, game names and anywhere else that strips emoji.

Its relatives change the expression rather than the meaning: owo swaps the closed eyes for wide open ones, UwU in capitals reads louder, and >w< squeezes the eyes shut. Below they are all here to copy, together with the softer kaomoji people use in the same places.

How to use uwu

  • Messages: uwu after a sentence softens it — tone, not content.
  • Display name: plain ASCII, so it passes every filter there is.
  • Captions: owo reads as surprise; uwu reads as contentment.
  • Anywhere: no font needed, so it can never show as a box.
uwu is the only thing on this site that cannot break: three ASCII letters need no font and no filter will strip them.

What uwu actually means

uwu is a face written with three letters. The two us are closed, happy eyes and the w is a small smiling mouth. It needs no special characters at all — which is why it works in absolutely every field, including the ones that reject emoji and decorated text.

owo is the same face with wide open eyes instead: surprise rather than contentment. UwU in capitals reads as louder or more emphatic, and >w< is the squeezed-eyes version.

It began as a Japanese-style text face and spread through anime and furry communities in the 2010s before becoming general internet shorthand for something small and endearing. Because it is plain ASCII, it predates and outlives every font problem on this site.

The parts a text face is built from

A text face is assembled from three slots: two eyes, a mouth, and usually a pair of brackets. Once you know which character does which job you can build any face rather than hunting for one.

PartCode pointUnicode nameJob in the face
U+25DCUpper left quadrant circular arcA closed, curved eye
U+25DDUpper right quadrant circular arcIts mirror — the other closed eye
U+1D54Modifier letter small top half oA happy squinting eye
U+1D55Modifier letter small bottom half oA soft smiling mouth
U+15DCCanadian syllabics Carrier THUThe wide open grin
U+1D17Latin small letter bottom half oA rounder smile
U+203FUndertieA punctuation mark used as a closed smile
U+2A4AUnion beside and joined with unionA set-theory operator used as a cat-like mouth
U+03C9Greek small letter omegaThe classic kaomoji mouth
U+30EEKatakana letter small waAn open, shouting mouth

Not one of these was designed for a face. They are geometry, phonetics, punctuation, set theory, Greek and Japanese — picked purely because the shape sits at the right height on the line. That is also why they never break: they are letters, so no filter strips them and any ordinary font can draw them.

Frequently asked questions
What does uwu mean?It is a face rather than a word: two closed happy eyes (the u shapes) around a small smiling mouth (the w). People use it to mark affection or to soften the tone of a message, roughly the way a smiley does.
What is the difference between uwu and owo?The eyes. uwu has them closed and contented; owo has them wide open, so it reads as surprise or sudden interest. The w mouth is the same in both.
What does UwU in capitals mean? The same face, read as louder or more emphatic — the text equivalent of saying it with more energy. There is no separate meaning.
Does uwu work in a game or username field?Yes, everywhere. It is three ordinary ASCII letters, so no filter strips it and no device is missing a font for it. That is the one thing it has over every decorated symbol on this site.
Where did uwu come from?It began as a Japanese-style text face and spread through anime and furry communities online during the 2010s before becoming general internet shorthand for something small and endearing.
