A happy face can be a character, a borrowed letter or an emoji, and the three behave very differently. ☺ is a real face character and has been in Unicode since 1993. ツ is a Japanese syllable that people use as a grin. 😊 is an emoji — a fixed-colour picture.

The text smileys are older than emoji by decades and none of them was designed as a face. ツ is a Japanese syllable, ‿ is a punctuation mark, and ◕ is a geometric shape — all borrowed because the shapes work.

☺ is the exception: WHITE SMILING FACE really is a face, and it has been in Unicode since the very first version in 1993 — long before anyone called such a thing an emoji.

☺ and 😊 are not the same kind of thing.

☺ is text. It takes your text colour and passes name filters. On some phones it is drawn in colour anyway, because it also has an emoji presentation — add U+FE0E after it to force the flat version.
😊 is an emoji. Fixed colour, and stripped by most in-game name fields.

The smiley is older than the emoji

☺ WHITE SMILING FACE was in Unicode 1.0, in 1993 — decades before emoji reached phones. It arrived as a dingbat, a printer’s ornament, and it is still a text character today rather than an emoji.

Only the first three were designed as faces. The rest are letters, which is exactly why they pass a username filter that rejects pictures.

ASCII smileys — the ones that never break

Before any of this there was 🙂, typed on a keyboard. ASCII smileys need no font at all, so they cannot show as an empty rectangle and no filter has ever stripped them — the only characters on this site with that guarantee.

They are also the only ones that survive a plain-text export, a terminal, a CSV file or a very old phone untouched. If something absolutely must arrive intact, this is the set to use.
